Following behind Cole, I was escorted out to the sunroom, where my pops rested back in the huge patio chair, reading the newspaper as a spread of assorted breakfast foods and fruits sat before him. I had only been back in Virginia a few hours but long enough to drop Ivanna home, head home to drop my bags, shower, and now be at my pops’. It was a little before nine, and it was no use in holding off meeting with Pops about what went down with his connect. A lot of dudes would have waited it out, even waited until they were summoned before addressing the problem, but not me. I preferred to get the shit over with when it happened. Waiting would only prolong the process, and to me, waiting meant I was afraid.

Nothing scared me.

Looking over my shoulder, I watched Cole’s big ass haul from the room like he was scared. It was funny in my opinion. Cole was loyal and a shooter, but at heart, he was a bitch. Pops treated him like shit and didn’t value him as an employee and surely not a so-called friend. Cole had always been a doormat for him, and the shit was sad because he was too damn big and powerful for the shit he laid down for.

The clearing of my pops’ throat mixed with the ruffling of the paper prompted me to direct my attention back his way. Pops’ eyes held disappointment, so I knew Shadow had already given the word that we were at war before I could. I wasn’t even surprised.

“Have a seat,” he instructed, pointing to the empty chair across from him, where I sat. “What the fuck happened, Niko?” he hissed, folding the newspaper fully.

I gave the rundown of what had taken place from start to finish, not leaving out a thing. I watched his eyes turn cold the more I spoke.

He sat up. “Why the fuck was that bitch with you?” he roared. My jaw twitched as I processed him also calling Ivanna out of her family given name.

It was a rookie move bringing Ivanna along, and I realized it when it was too late. Either way, the damage had been done, but her being there didn’t give Shadow the right to disrespect her. He was a horny, nasty fucker that probably took advantage of a lot of women because he had the power to do so. Yes, he was my connect I’d inherited from my pops, but Ivanna was my girl. Connect or not, he wouldn’t disrespect her. Had Shadow not been fresh and kept his hands and rude ass comments to himself, we wouldn’t be here. Even if Ivanna shouldn’t have been present, right was right, and wrong was wrong. Shadow was dead fucking wrong for the stunt he had pulled. He gathered us all there to kill off the snake, yet he took it further, becoming a snake himself. I wasn’t ashamed or fazed that an enemy had now been created with his bitch ass.
